About Green Thread Quilting

Green Thread Quilting began as a dream and a hopeful philosophy.  I have always been a champion of creative reuse. Throughout my life I have loved rummage sales and second-hand finds.  I loved the stories and the history that came with previously owned items, and it also gave me an opportunity to obtain material to create with that was out of my reach financially.  I have never given that up.  Reuse is important.  Our generations before us knew this and practiced it without question.  My hope is that this ingrained philosophy of living can be found once again.  Within the sewing world, we are fortunate and blessed to have the creativity, talent, and artistry of businesses and individuals that produce many new and beautiful items, including gorgeous fabrics and inventive and helpful sewing tools that we would not want to be without.

Reuse is not all or nothing.  There is room for both the new and the old.

We need both.

My hope for Green Thread Quilting is for it to be a small piece of the thoughtfulness that is needed to help us find our way to a new philosophy of reuse.  Although it may only be a small piece within a much, much larger need, as quilters and creatives we know very well that small pieces add up to a brilliant whole.  With every project submitted, I am always open to conversation about reuse efforts.  It is with our collective and thoughtful ideas that we can and will contribute to that brilliant whole.

I love to sew.

I have been sewing in some shape or form since I was 8 or 9 years old.  Even as a young child, I loved to sift through old button baskets, study the fabrics in quilts, and pore over vintage sewing magazines and books.

Over the years, I've sewn clothing, bags, home dec, dolls, stuffed toys, formal event accessories, and made countless repairs and alterations.  I've loved them all.  Throughout, an interest and fascination with quilting was always present.  I dabbled in it here and there, and then around 2008, the quilting bug bit hard.  During those early days of the rise of sewing blogs, I discovered the sewing and quilting online community, and I was captivated.  Several years later, I discovered longarm quilting, but at the time it was only something I was able to read about and admire from afar.  I was working full time, and my children were in school.  Life and budgets were stretched and full.  Fast forward a bit, and fabric and quilt shops began adding longarm sales and services to their offerings; classes and rental time on machines soon followed.  This I could do!  After attending several classes and renting time on a variety of machines I began to dream and think about what a possible business might look like.  Simultaneously, as these things tend to happen, our life circumstances began to unfold in a different direction.  My husband and I made a multi-state move for his work, and thus my work life changed.  After a lot of contemplation and conversation, we decided to look at the timing of this new direction as a chance to move forward with my dream.  With a leap of faith and a business plan in hand, I brought home a second-hand, "new-to-me",  longarm quilting machine, and Green Thread Quilting came to be.  My business is in my home and has become integrated into our life and family. I have always sewn "at home", and it felt right to continue to do so today.  My studio is located in the lower level of our home, and is filled with fabric, vintage machines, and lots and lots of books.
